GLOBAL ALLIANCE WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS: THE ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION AND CROWN FAMILY PHILANTHROPIES

The Global Alliance for the Future of Food is pleased to announce that both The Rockefeller Foundation and Crown Family Philanthropies have joined our alliance of over 20 philanthropic foundations working together and with others to transform global food systems now and for future generations.

The Rockefeller Foundation’s work on food systems focuses on new thinking, bold initiatives, increased capacities, and the ability to translate innovative science into effective policy and practice in collaboration with dedicated, courageous, and creative partners who believe in creating a food revolution that feeds, nourishes, and sustains us for generations to come.

“We must move from the Green Revolution to a Food System Revolution,” says Food Director Roy Steiner. “The role of partnerships for us at Rockefeller Foundation is absolutely critical because we want systems change; that cannot be done by just one actor in the system. It needs lots of different people who can contribute to making the shift because that’s the only way we are going to create the fundamental transformational change that this food system, at this point in history, requires. For these reasons, our membership in the Global Alliance is very important and exciting for us.”

The Global Alliance believes that we must bring diverse perspectives together to inform how we, as a global community, shape the future of food together and combine our collective knowledge, expertise, influence, and resources to amplify our voice and reach on the global stage at a scale and scope we might not otherwise achieve individually.

After more than 60 years of family grant-making under the name Arie and Ida Crown Memorial, Crown Family Philanthropies (CFP) was developed in 2009 as an umbrella organization for a variety of family grant-making. CFP’s environmental grant-making supports efforts to value, preserve, and restore natural ecosystems through innovative science-based approaches, emphasizing collaborative efforts delivering measurable results.

Michelle Parker, Program Officer of Crown Family Philanthropies, says, “CFP is honored to join forces with Global Alliance members in our shared goal of a healthy, thriving future for all life.”

In the philanthropic world, we don’t have many incentives to collaborate and our idiosyncrasies make it hard to combine efforts. However, business-as-usual will have severe negative impacts environmentally, socially, and economically; and food systems reform requires that we craft new and better solutions at all scales through a systems-level approach and deep collaboration. This is why we at the Global Alliance are challenging ourselves to work in new and different ways that allow us to realize the benefits of working collectively and tackling the complexity of the food system together. Building on our diverse membership, including welcoming Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiatives who joined earlier this year, we are thrilled to have The Rockefeller Foundation and Crown Family Philanthropies join us in this critical imperative.
