Analysis by the Global Alliance for the Future of Food, in partnership with Climate Focus and Solidaridad, recently revealed there is huge potential for global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions in one sector that remains largely overlooked: food systems transformation. Food production, processing, distribution, consumption, and waste account for nearly a third of total global GHG emissions.

Hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Global Alliance for the Future of Food, and the NDC Partnership, this panel discussion will present updates from countries’ new and revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and details other actions that are being undertaken to leverage the potential of agriculture and food systems for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Speakers will highlight the findings of two key publications: FAO’s 2021 (Interim) Global Update Report: Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in the Nationally Determined Contributions and the Global Alliance’s report Untapped Opportunities for Climate Action: An Assessment of Food Systems in Nationally Determined Contributions.

Objectives

  • Enhance understanding of how agriculture and food systems priorities are being considered in countries’ NDCs
  • Present a framework to support countries in better integrating food systems and agricultural priorities in their NDCs
  • Provide a platform to share experiences, good practices and lessons learned to leverage the potential of agriculture and food systems for climate change adaptation and mitigation.
