COP27 Events: Food systems on the agenda

Acting on our mission to advance the case for food systems transformation, the Global Alliance for the Future of Food is pleased to be part of numerous in-person and virtual sessions at this year’s climate Conference of the Parties (COP27) negotiations. THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES TO MOBILIZE FINANCE SOLUTIONS FOR FOOD SYSTEM TRANSFORMATION

The food system has financial gaps that need to be solved in order to fund adaptation for climate-resilient futures. There are numerous challenges to this goal, including accessibility in the financing, scaling SMEs to commercial levels and more.

PUT HEALTHY DIETS AND NUTRITION AT THE CENTER OF FOOD SYSTEM TRANSFORMATION

Globally millions of people are at risk of under-nourishment due to extreme climate events that threaten local food production. There is also an increasing epidemic of obesity and diet-related illnesses that coincides with the rise of Western-style diets. Speakers will discuss why it is essential to put healthy diets at the centre of the agrifood system reform that responds to the climate emergency.

Patty Fong from the Global Alliance for the Future of Food will be a guest speaker. The event is co-hosted by Health and Climate Network, EAT, E3G, Global Alliance for the Future of Food, IFMSA, and Rockefeller Foundation.

MAKING THE RESILIENCE SHIFT: ADDRESSING THE FOOD SYSTEMS, HEALTH AND CLIMATE NEXUS FROM RURAL TO URBAN

Highlighting the health implications of climate-driven food insecurity, this session will focus on existing programs that strengthen the climate resilience and economic viability of the food supply chain while also improving the livelihoods of small-scale farmers. It will look at the key role that early warning systems play in making the urban-rural supply chain more climate resilient, and the widespread health and environment benefits of including food systems in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Vivian Maduekeh from the Global Alliance for the Future of Food will be a guest speaker. The event is co-hosted by Abt Associates & Resurgence, and The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

CLIMATE SECURITY & AGRICULTURE: STRATEGIES FOR INCLUSIVE ADAPTATION

Join policymakers who will announce a key commitment to locally-based agronomic solutions and hear from grassroots leaders who will share strategies for ensuring an inclusive and resilient global food system. Together they will identify entry points and promising practices for realizing equal access to decision-making, climate financing, land ownership, technology, and agronomy research.

Patty Fong from the Global Alliance will be moderating the session. This event is co-hosted by CGIAR, Georgetown University’s Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS), the Government of Ireland and The Rockefeller Foundation.

VALUING FOOD AND AGRICULTURE SYSTEMS: TRUE COST ACCOUNTING AS A ROADMAP TO MEANINGFUL CLIMATE SOLUTIONS

Global food systems make up a third of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as being a key driver of nature loss. This panel highlights ways the public and private sectors can address these risks, including true cost accounting, sustainable food pledges and pricing, and Good Food Finance interventions.

This event is co-hosted by UNFCCC, True Cost Accounting Accelerator (TCAA), Citizens Climate Education Corp, Food Tank, Good Food Finance Network, TAPP Coalition and The Rockefeller Foundation.

FUTURE LABS: FUTURE OF FOOD

Food systems contribute one-third of all global greenhouse gas emissions, yet receive just 3% of public climate finance. Even if we stopped all other emissions immediately, global food-related emissions alone would cause us to overshoot the 1.5°C target. Food systems transformation can provide at least 1/5 of what’s needed to stay below 1.5°C degrees, while providing many other benefits such as improved health, nutrition, livelihoods, and increased resilience to future climate and food crises. It is not only possible, it is happening now in different places and in different ways around the world. This session will explore the diverse and innovative ways leaders are transforming their food systems and the common ingredients for success. 

This event is organized by Global Alliance for the Future of Food and UNFCCC Climate Champions.  Patty Fong from the Global Alliance will be moderating the session with opening remarks from Nigel Topping, High-Level Climate Champion. Speakers include Helmy Abouliesh (SEKEM), Barbara Baarsma, (Rabo Carbon Bank), Steve Chiu (Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation), John Mundy (One Acre Fund), Christine Nabwami (Uganda Small Scale Farmers Association), Latha Swamy (City of New Haven and Milan Urban Food Policy Pact) and Felipe Vilela (Re-nature).

OPPORTUNITIES FOR DIRECTING CLIMATE FINANCE TO RESILIENT AND AGROECOLOGICAL FOOD SYSTEMS

Climate financing and investments to increase food systems resilience and meet mitigation, food security, and nutrition objectives are insufficient. Governments must lead the way by prioritizing food systems reform and agroecology in their NDCs and directing public finance and resources adequately.

Patty Fong from the Global Alliance will open and moderate the session, with panel representatives from the African Development Bank, AFSA, Green Climate Fund, Uganda, and private investors, and with concluding remarks by the FAO and IFAD.

Building healthy and resilient communities in Africa to withstand the climate crisis.

Healthy communities are a key pillar for climate resilience and critical for social well-being. To promote public health, ensure that populations can withstand climate shocks, and maintain development, action across sectors, including health, energy, clean cooking, and agriculture is necessary.

Vivian Maduekeh from the Global Alliance will be a guest speaker, joining government representatives from environment and health ministries of Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and/or South Africa; Amref Health Africa, Enviro News, GreenPlinth Africa LTD, Nurses Across the Borders, Solar Cookers International, South African Medical Association, and Whole Earth Initiative, 

ROADMAP TO COP28: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

After two weeks of COP, this session will reflect on the negotiations, launched COP initiatives, 11 days of thematic programming at the Food Systems Pavilions, and other official COP events to discuss to which extent food was at the heart of COP27. The speakers in this session will reflect on their personal highlights from COP-27, the quality and relevance of the emerging decisions from COP27, initiatives launched at COP, and overall assessment of the role of food at this year’s COP. The session will close with a glance into the future on the road to COP28.
