MISSING THE MARK? GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY TARGETS RISK FAILURE WITHOUT AGROECOLOGY

This side-event brings forward the latest evidence in support of agroecology — with a strong focus on agricultural biodiversity and within the framework of food sovereignty — as a fundamental basis for a global biodiversity strategy and essential to the Global Biodiversity Framework.

The Global Alliance for the Future of Food will be co-hosting this event with African Biodiversity Network, African Centre for Biodiversity, Agropolis Foundation, Coventry University Centre for Water and Resilience (CAWR), Friends of the Earth International, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP), Latin American Scientific Society for Agroecology (SOCLA), Laurier Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (Canada), UNESCO Chair on Food, Biodiversity, and Sustainability Studies, and the University of Vermont EcoNexus.

The Food Day at Rio Convention Pavilion is a full day of events, discussion and showcasing of solutions at UNCBD COP15. By focusing on transforming food systems to reverse biodiversity loss and achieve food security and nutrition for all, this day will help countries, organizations and the science community develop stronger plans, and actions for implementation to achieve the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework under the Convention on Biological Diversity. It will also explore cross-cutting policy responses spanning multiple global agreements. The events the Global Alliance will be co-hosting and speaking at include:   

13:00 – 13:50 PM ET: Transforming aquatic and terrestrial food systems together in the Global Biodiversity Framework & beyond

15:00 – 15:50 PM ET: Power of the Consumer – scaling demand side actions to spur a radical transformation of our food system

15:50 – 16:40 PM ET: Power of Finance – aligning agricultural subsidies with nature and biodiversity goals: shifting the trillions towards a nature-positive economy

16:40 – 17:30 PM ET: Power of Business – from ambition to action: scaling nature- positive food systems by 2030

Lauren Baker from the Global Alliance for the Future of Food will be a guest speaker. The full-day event, co-organized by WWF, UNCCD, UNCBD, WBCSD, IFAD, FAIRR, the Global Alliance for the Future of Food, Environmental Defense Fund, Equilibrium Research, CropTrust, TMG, CGIAR/Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT, and Plantlife.
